Course ContentThe course examines the formation and development of the modern state in the contemporary world. It surveys major topics, theoretical debates and approaches in the field of state-formation and nation-building, wich can be pieced together under the concept of nationalism. The current trends in the literature which implies a necessary link between the processes of modernization and state/nation-building are critically reviewed. In this respect, state-building both in Europe and outside of Europe will be discussed in a comparative framework.
